SCARLETT

My heart pounds as I board down the mountainside, the cold wind snapping like rubber bands against the few bare spots on my face. As I make my way to the bottom, I lift my goggles and find Norris standing there, his handsome face outstretched in the brightest smile I’ve seen on him yet.

Even sex didn’t elicit that smile and I’m curious as to the impetus for the change.

I unclip my boots and grab my board, making my way over to him. “How did you know I was here?” I ask, my heart thumping harder the closer I get to him.

“Stacey at the front desk told me you took off in head-to-toe gear. I figured you’d be out here blowing off some steam. Can we talk?”

I shift anxiously, my stomach filled to the brim with butterflies. “Sure,” I say, “but I don’t know if it’s going to go the way you want.”

“What do you mean?” he asks, that smile wiping from his face.

I exhale deeply, trying to steady my nerves. I’ve thought about this a lot and here on the mountain, when I usually have clarity, I’ve only found confusion, but this is for the best. “Listen, Norris, I really like you, but I don’t think it would work out. I take risks that aren’t always good, and drag people into my shenanigans, and now I’ve gotten you in trouble with your cousin. I don’t wanna make your life complicated or cause you grief because of the way I am.”

“The way you are?” He crosses his arms and those bulky muscles pop against his tight suede jacket and his right brow pops up with a sexy slowly rise. The man isn’t intimidating, he’s invigorating…stimulating…and even exhilarating. Like boarding in fresh powder—sparkling snow flying everywhere and the board feeling like it could fly off my boots at any minute—he’s death defyingly alluring.

“Yeah, you know, the way I am. Reckless, messy, almost feral in some ways. I’m just going to make life hard for you if you get caught up in the disarray that is my life.”

He steps closer to me, the heat radiating off him warming my cheeks, and presses a finger to my lips. “Listen, Rudy told me to tell you he’s sorry for saying he’d kick us out. He didn’t really mean it, he was just a bit in shock, I think. And you don’t have to worry about causing me grief. You don’t cause me grief, Scarlett. You make me realize that there might be someone for me in this crazy world after all, someone who’s chaos and energy for life actually kinda matches my own strange way of living.”

I swallow hard. He’s making so much sense and he’s so calm. Then why do I feel like I’m going to faint, and that my brain can’t put two words together?

“What are you trying to say?” I ask as he stares down at me, his gaze piercing my very soul.

“What I’m trying to say is that … I love you, Scarlett.
